Hide and Seek (Birthday special)

Every excuse is just that—a mere excuse, leading us away from the Lord of the Universe. In reality, that excuse is just a part of the journey to reach Him! The illusion we try to escape from to seek His refuge—He is the master of that very illusion. He *is* that illusion! So, how can you ever truly run away from Him? Don’t fear the illusion; instead, see the Illusion and its Master together! Then, you won’t need to run anymore. You’ll just need to *feel* Him—the one you’re thinking about right now!

I’m not saying this; it was said to me by someone I met in Vrindavan. Who is she? How did I meet her? Before getting into that, I want to share something beautiful she told me: *"In love, only love exists! But where 'but' or 'maybe' sneaks in, it may seem like love, but it’s not truly love!"*

When she first told me this, I didn’t quite understand it. But now, I’m beginning to feel it. Earlier, I used to think Krishna must love me, but now, I’m actually experiencing the love I once only imagined, all because of her!

This wasn't my first time, but after a long while, I visited Vrindavan again, around the onset of the autumn season. It was like a group trip; I was already fond of Krishna, so I was excited to see Him and explore Vrindavan. The last time I had been there was in my childhood, so I couldn’t even remember it clearly. We booked a bus together, singing and swaying to Radha-Krishna songs as we journeyed ahead. It was truly blissful, as if my heart was overflowing with joy!

When I stepped out of the bus, I took a deep breath... It felt like I had come home. Slowly, I moved forward with everyone, looking around, trying to recall some childhood memories. Everything around me seemed mysterious. I view Krishna as a mystery, so it felt like He was there, ready to do something. When a monkey snatched my offering, I thought, "He did that." Every time the wind blew fiercely, I’d think of Him and smile. Outside, a different world was unfolding, while inside, another.

I had come with a travel agency, so it was the kind where you could go anywhere, anytime, with the option of a tour guide. I wouldn’t go alone, so I went ahead with the tour guide and the rest of the group. That day, we visited some temples and nearby places associated with Krishna. Even then, I was lost in my world, imagining Him everywhere and constantly smiling! I thought, “I’ve come to meet Him, but when will He come?”

At night, I was too sleepy, feeling a tickling sensation in my stomach. I kept thinking, “Krishna, come soon to meet me.” Sometimes I’d get emotional, thinking, “I’m on His own land.” I don’t know what all thoughts I had until I finally fell asleep.

In the morning, I dressed up nicely for darshan because I had heard He values adornment. I thought, why not give it a try—maybe I’d hit the target!

I got delayed while getting ready; everyone had already left. I set out alone, using Google Maps, towards a famous temple I had heard a lot about. When I arrived, the crowd overwhelmed me. I mean, in my mind, Krishna was standing there with open arms, but seeing such a fierce competition to meet Him broke my heart. I felt like maybe I wasn’t special to Him after all... Everyone’s special... What’s so special about me? I was so angry... I sat outside, waging some internal battle while looking at the temple.

Just then, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see a sweet girl, probably around 18 years old, sitting and looking at me. I was startled because I had been in my own world, and suddenly being pulled out of it took some adjustment!

She smiled and said, “What happened? Planning to meet Him from here?”

Hesitantly, I replied, “No, I was just about to go inside...” I didn’t know what else to say to her.

“There will never be a lack of crowds for Him... In fact, the crowd will only grow... The one you’re waiting for—He’ll get lost in the crowd like this!” she said, laughing.

“Then what can I do, other than wait?” I responded, pouting.

“You can play a game with Him...”

“How can we play without Him?” I asked, feeling sad.

“Do you want to see? Right now, I’m also playing with Him... If you want, you can come with me and enjoy it!”

“What kind of game? But...”

“Hide and seek...!”

I just kept looking at her because I didn’t quite understand her answer!

“Oh, what are you thinking?! I’ll show you a different side of Him, away from the crowd... Come with me!”

She stood up and started walking, and I followed. As we walked, I asked her, “A different side, away from the crowd? What does that mean? How many forms does He have?”

“Well, you have many friends, right? Do you treat them all the same? No, right? You behave with each according to your relationship—joke around with some, talk only about work with others!”

I smiled and nodded.

“Similarly, He’s the same. Don’t think of Him as something separate. He feels pain, He feels joy... Yet, He is beyond all of this, but still involved in everything!”

“But He is God, right?” I asked her.

“Yes, He is God... That’s why He’s in the temple amidst the crowd. You can meet Him there too... But if you want to meet Him as your own, then... come with me...!”

I smiled and continued walking with her. Along the way, she told me about different places associated with Krishna and spoke about Him with such enthusiasm that it felt like she was talking about someone close to her. She would blush, smile, and sometimes even seem shy as she spoke!

We reached a high spot where almost all of Braj was visible.

“Do you see the crowd from here?” she asked me.

“No...”

“And Him? Do you see Him?”

“No...”

“Then get ready to meet Him!”

“Really? Will He come? How will I meet Him?”

She took my hand and led me back down to the lanes of Braj.

“Do you know why He’s not easy to meet?”

“Why?” I asked eagerly.

“When He comes before you, there’s no beginning or end left... To love Him, you first have to feel the love! Is always seeing Him in front of you what love is about? Love is seeing Him always happy!”

“But what’s the harm? If we meet face to face, He’ll always be happy, right?”

“He’s always in front of you... But we just can’t see Him. He too waits for the day we’ll recognize Him... Just like when you’re with your family every day, you don’t feel their presence as much. But when you meet after a long time, that love, the excitement of meeting, the joy of being together—it’s different, isn’t it?”

She was holding my hand, walking alongside me. Suddenly, I stopped and asked, “Why send Him away at all if we’re going to meet again?”

She smiled and looked into my eyes, saying, “When children grow up, they leave their parents’ side, right? To make them proud when they meet again... They leave to achieve something, to become something... Tell me, isn’t it necessary to leave?”

“Alright, alright, I agree it’s necessary... But why take so long? He’s God; can’t He come sooner? For Him, everything is possible!”

“I’ll answer that in a bit... For now, come with me!”

She was taking me along when suddenly she stopped and said, “Do you see that cow and that puppy? Here, feed them these.” She took out two pieces of bread from her bag and handed them to me.

I did as she asked, and it felt so good to feed them with my own hands. She stood there, watching me. After I finished feeding them, I turned to her.

“Do you know who these beings are?” she asked.

“Animals...!”

“They, too, were created by the One you came here to meet... So, would He only love that crowd? Are these not His? An artist feels a connection to every piece of art. These are all pieces of His heart!”

“Yes, that’s true... But I don’t understand what you’re trying to say!”

“If you want to meet Him, meet Him through His creations... You’ll find new ways to understand and love Him... The word *love* may seem small, but its meaning is deeper than the ocean... When you start seeing everything related to Him as your own, you’ll find Him everywhere... because you’re meeting Him through everything He loves!”

She started walking ahead as she said this. I followed her and asked another question, “But not everyone in this world is good... What if I get hurt?”

“Action is in human hands... You do your duty and leave the rest to Him... because...”

“Because??” I looked at her.

Suddenly, she looked into my eyes and said, “Do you want to dance with Him?”

“Yes, why not!” I answered enthusiastically.

Before I could finish speaking, she grabbed my hand and led me to the banks of the Yamuna.

“Close your eyes... Feel the breeze and think of Him!”

I did as she said, and suddenly it started raining. I opened my eyes and saw her spinning around, lost in her own world, humming softly. I did the same, and for a moment, it felt like I had forgotten all my joys and sorrows. The touch of the raindrops sent a wave of energy through my body, and I just wanted to keep saying, "Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna!"

Suddenly, she pulled my hand and took me under a tree. She said to me, "What if I tell you that the one you came to meet is standing right behind you?"

My heart started pounding loudly. I didn’t have the courage to turn around, yet I wanted to. It was a strange feeling, as if the one you've been waiting for so long is just outside your door, and someone tells you that they are here! You feel like rushing to them, but there's also a certain nervousness!!

She looked into my eyes and smiled. "Don't be afraid of him... Anyway, he won't be able to find me here. Oh, I forgot to tell you, we’re playing hide and seek, and when he comes here, I’ll hide behind the bushes of Braj. And believe me, he won't be able to find me," she said shyly.

I was trying to understand her words when she said again, "This vine of Braj, try embracing it once... You will feel his presence in every particle of Braj... You'll feel so good!"

Without thinking much, I followed her advice... Ah! The joy was indescribable... It wasn’t just joy; it was bliss... The sound of the rain was all around, and as I embraced the vine, it felt as though it was whispering to me...!!!

"Save some for later...!" she teased me. I blushed and moved away, lowering my eyes. Just then, my phone rang. It was time to leave for Barsana that night, and since it was already evening, I had to hurry. I told her, and she smiled and said, "Come here before you go!"

Nearby was the Yamuna Ghat. The rain had stopped by then, so we walked slowly. When we reached there, she sat by the Yamuna and asked, "Do you know why this Yamuna is so special?!"

"Because Lord Krishna loves her so much!!"

"No... because she loves him so much... It's no surprise that he loves her back. After all, everyone is his... so he loves all his own. But the one who returns that love to him manyfold, that is what makes them special... and that soul becomes special in the universe!"

Taking a bit of the Braj soil in her hands, she applied it to my forehead and said, "You were asking why he, being God, can’t meet you soon...!! Do you know why... because our story has already been written... If you eat a fruit before it ripens, will it be delicious? The fruit will come into its true form at its destined time... Likewise, he too... If he comes to meet you today, how will you receive the special gift he has planned for you tomorrow?! If he had met Rukmini Ji before, would she have received that love letter? Would he have come to abduct her?!"

I was just listening to her, completely engrossed in her words, her image forming in my mind... "Have you met him?" I asked her.

"You may hear stories of meeting him or finding him anywhere, but do you want to know how he feels when he meets or finds you?"

I eagerly nodded in agreement!

"Then listen...

You prepare yourself...

But he becomes the adornment!

You dance...

But he immerses himself in the melody!

You smile at his name...

But the blush on your cheeks is him...

You take his name...

But his breath is caught!

If he had his way, he’d leave everything and come to you right now...

Yet he holds himself back through promises!"

What promise? I asked her.

"When he comes to you, you will remember the promise... you eill recognize him through a strange sensation!... But his condition when he meet... I can't even describe it... His restlessness, and that smile of his... When he looks at you, it's as if he won’t let you go anywhere!"

Ah... By then, I was already feeling shy, thinking about his presence nearby. I changed the topic and asked her, "Oh, I forgot to ask your name!!"

"My name... My work, everything, I have given to him... Now, what is mine is truly his...!!"

I smiled lightly at her words. Just then, I got another call to return... "Well, I must go now... I have to return!"

She smiled and bid me farewell, then sat by the Yamuna, eyes closed. I got into an auto to head back to the bus stop... It was a bit far from there... The auto driver was waiting for more passengers. Meanwhile, a child came running to me, handing me a paper, and said, "Give this to Bhaujai... Bhaiya gave it!" pointing to her, whom I had just bid farewell to. The child quickly ran away, and out of curiosity, without thinking, I opened the paper, and it said...

"I found you at last, didn’t I?!"

My heart... My breath stopped... I don't know why, but as soon as I read it... The auto started moving, and with a gust of wind, the paper flew away, landing where it belonged... I kept looking back, trying to understand what was happening... And when I finally understood, it was already too late... I left that place, but that special place and those special people, their words, I couldn't leave behind!!

Even now, as I write this, many of her words I don’t even remember... But that feeling, that sensation, I can’t forget no matter how hard I try... Everything has felt different since I returned from there... I don't know if I have changed, or if it’s them... Or maybe, this is another one of his games!!
